First Steps Count Staff Complete Rhythm2Recovery Training in Sydney

On Thursday 20 & Friday 21  November 2025, FSC Team Members Toni Carson & Victoria Schumann travelled to Sydney to attend the Rhythm2Recovery (R2R) training program. The two‑day workshop introduced participants to a strength‑based therapeutic model that blends experiential techniques, Cognitive‑Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Positive Psychology.

The training resonated strongly with Toni, whose background as a Social Worker and counsellor has long focused on cognitive approaches. Exposure to the R2R model opened new pathways for incorporating somatic, movement‑based work into her counselling practice, allowing trauma responses to be unlocked in the body and the mind.

Back at the Taree hub, Toni and Victoria are already planning to roll out the first women’s R2R group in February. The aim is to use the program not only as a therapeutic offering but also as a team‑building exercise with the many service providers operating within First Steps Count.

“I would like to do further somatic work in movement and pull it all together to be far more inclusive and holistic in my practice,” says Toni.

The ability to deliver R2R locally is underpinned by generous community support. Local music therapist Scott Greenaway has loaned the drums originally used in the training, while Catholic Care contributed additional percussion instruments, covering the most costly elements of the program. These contributions ensure that the centre can run Rhythm 2 Recovery sessions without additional financial barriers.

First Steps Count also wishes to thank Communities for Children for funding Toni’s participation in the training. The introduction of Rhythm2Recovery methodologies marks a significant step forward in the centre’s mission to provide integrated, trauma‑informed support. By combining evidence‑based counselling with rhythmic music practices, First Steps Count is strengthening its role as a safe, welcoming hub where families can heal, connect and thrive.
