Our Women’s Group Yarn. Create. Belong. Continues to Grow & Connect.

Every Tuesday morning, the First Steps Count Women's Group gathers for a vibrant and creative morning, engaging in craft activities and engaging in meaningful conversations. This session was part of the 'Yarn. Create. Belong.' project, a community-driven 12-month initiative supporting women, particularly parents and carers of children aged 0-12, who face social isolation, parenting challenges, and trauma.

'Yarn. Create. Belong.' is designed to provide a safe and welcoming space where women can connect, build trust, and engage in skill-sharing through informal, culturally inclusive gatherings. Facilitated by qualified staff and university students, these sessions promote healing, enhance communication, and strengthen social bonds using trauma-informed practices.

The project is open to all women in the community, with a particular focus on those who are parents or carers of children aged 0-12 and are experiencing social isolation, parenting challenges, or trauma. The gatherings cover a wide range of skills, including traditional crafts, storytelling, life skills, and business skills, fostering intergenerational learning and a rich exchange of knowledge.

Qualified staff and university students play a crucial role in the project, facilitating the gatherings to ensure they are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and beneficial to all participants. Their expertise helps create a structured and nurturing environment for learning and growth.

By encouraging open communication and mutual support, 'Yarn. Create. Belong.' helps reduce isolation, promote healing, and strengthen the social fabric of the community. The project is a testament to First Steps Count's commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all women in the Mid Coast region.
