First Steps Count Team Presents at International Childhood Trauma Conference in Melbourne

First Steps Count Child and Community Centre is proud to share that our Centre Leader, Toni Carson, represented our organisation at the International Childhood Trauma Conference in Melbourne from Sunday 17 to Friday 22 August. Accompanied by STARS for Kids research facilitator, Sophie, and Bec, a parent who shared her inspiring story, they presented our unique approach to community-led support and the impactful work we do at First Steps Count.

The International Childhood Trauma Conference, themed "Transforming trauma: connection and healing," brought together practitioners, researchers, and advocates from around the globe to explore innovative approaches to childhood trauma. This year, the conference focused on the power of connection and community in healing trauma, aligning perfectly with our work at First Steps Count.

Toni, Sophie, and Bec presented our model of co-design with the Taree community, highlighting the importance of relational practice and community engagement. Their presentation delved into the various ways we connect with our local community, from community art projects and coffee catch-ups to women's groups and anonymous feedback initiatives. They also discussed the formation of ‘Ngarra Wakulda,’ the Aboriginal Community Consultation Group, underscoring our commitment to inclusive and collaborative practices.

Bec's personal story was a highlight of the presentation, offering a powerful account of her journey with First Steps Count and the positive impact it has had on her and her family. Her confidence and resilience in sharing her experiences undoubtedly inspired the conference attendees.

We are incredibly proud of Toni, Sophie, and Bec for representing First Steps Count on this important stage. Their participation in the conference not only showcased our innovative work but also reinforced our dedication to supporting families and children in the Taree community.
