Reflecting on FSC’s Winter School Holiday Program: Art, Resilience & Exploration
Monday 6 July to Friday 17 July 2026 • Two weeks in July turned our Hub into a vibrant cross-section of everything First Steps Count stands for: from Uncle Mick's storytelling on Country to science experiments that sparked wonder, to Rhythm to Recovery sessions that found healing through sound.
Over 10 days of school holidays, local families gathered daily to explore, create, and connect. We’re incredibly grateful to the service providers who delivered the majority of these sessions in-kind, sharing their expertise, time, and passion to make this possible for Taree families.
Week 1
Monday 06 July – NAIDOC Craft with Hanna
Hanna from Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services returned to host a special morning of NAIDOC-themed craft activities. Families celebrated the rich culture and stories of Aboriginal people while creating meaningful artwork together.
Tuesday 07 July – Uncle Mick's Story & Craft
Uncle Mick shared a special reading of his book Balinga And The Djukal Djariibiyn — explaining how the Djarii got its name. This was followed by a fun craft activity inspired by the story, deepening children's connection to Country and culture. Thanks to Communities for Children for providing free copies of this amazing book for local families to take home.
Wednesday 08 July – Sand Art with Stacie
Stacie led an immersive sand art session where families explored textures, colours, and creativity. Children built intricate scenes in their sand, making some fun and unique designs.
Thursday 09 July – Indigenous Art Workshops with Kirsten Hammond
Kirsten Hammond from Chatham High School facilitated hands-on Indigenous art workshops, teaching traditional techniques while encouraging personal expression.
Friday 10 July – Hub Closed for NAIDOC Day on the Riverbank
The Hub closed for staff and families to join the broader community at the Biripi NAIDOC Day celebration on the riverbank. A wonderful opportunity to connect, reflect, and honour First Nations cultures together.
Week 2
Monday 13 July – Create & Play with Jarred: School of Rock Themed
Jarred from Coast Kids Occupational Therapy delivered his signature energy-filled session with a School of Rock twist. Children rocked out through movement, sound, and imaginative play.
Tuesday 14 July – Rhythm to Recovery with Victoria & Alicia
Victoria and Alicia facilitated a Rhythm to Recovery session, using music and rhythm to support wellbeing and emotional regulation. Families discovered powerful ways to connect through beat and melody.
Wednesday 15 July – Hey Warrior: Tips to Support Your Child's Anxious Feelings
A special session for both adults and children on understanding and supporting anxious feelings. Practical tips were shared in an accessible, engaging way that helped families navigate emotional challenges together.
Thursday 16 July – Nature Play with Alicia: Codebreaker Scavenger Hunt
Alicia led a nature-based scavenger hunt through the Hub's garden area. Children became codebreakers, solving clues while connecting with the natural world around them.
Friday 17 July – Science Experiments with Laura
Families worked together to create homemade volcanos! Children marvelled at reactions, predictions, and discoveries as curiosity sparked through the group.
Beyond the craft, the stories, and the science — what truly matters is the quiet magic that happens when families gather in one place and feel they belong. Whether it's a child discovering they love sand art, a parent finding support during an anxious moment, or a family learning about Country together, these are the moments that ripple outward.
When service providers and families come together without referrals, fees, or barriers, we don't just fill school holidays — we build a community that lasts far beyond July. We look forward to weaving creativity, connection, and culture into every season ahead.
