What’s your connection to the MidCoast / Taree?
After relocating to the area nearly 40 years ago, I worked part time in schools and at both Tuncurry/Forster (now GL) and Taree TAFE campuses. My sons attended local schools and formed friendships with both Indigenous and non Indigenous families, through sport and work. Through my involvement in Aboriginal homework centres, literacy tutoring and TAFE programs I have also been fortunate to connect with Elders and families. This connection was supported by membership of Manning AECG (Associate). The Taree TAFE Volunteer Tutor Literacy program gave me an opportunity to meet many other community members, assist with training in community agencies and establish story writing projects with families. Additionally, workplace assessment and training contracts required collaborative delivery with local industry and local government representatives. My commitment to Taree runs deep and it has rewarded me many times over.
What does First Steps Count mean to you?
Through the experiences and work I had at Taree TAFE and in the Manning Valley, I can appreciate the vital need for a welcoming, safe place for families, where the services which support them are " in place". The 0-12 years are important years for both parents, carers and children to form relationships and flourish, despite the demands and challenges they may face. First Steps Count feels like community within a beautiful building and space. It takes a valley to raise a child. I feel fortunate to be a part of the story and be able to contribute to its future.
What does success look like for you here at First Steps Count?
I feel that it is vital that First Steps Count continues to grow as a "place" as it is unique for the Manning community. Greater understanding of its purpose and operation will be ensured through stronger partnerships, both with business and organisations. The complementary services of agencies are enhanced by use of FSC spaces and families will be able to "demystify" the Services sector. This maximises the effectiveness of services for their family and builds trust with agencies. Also securing ongoing financial support is an essential measure of success.
